Tibetan Prayer Flags: This Summers Gift with Purchase

Posted on July 16, 2018

Why Tibetan Prayer Flags?

If you've ever had the pleasure of travelling to Nepal or Tibet then you couldn't miss the abundance of beautifully coloured flags strung across tall branches and blowing in the wind.

Tibetan Prayer flags are traditionally hung to promote peace, compassion, strength and wisdom, which are hugely important to the team at Saraswati Designs. By giving them as a gift with purchase we hope that you hang them to spread the sacred messages to all people in your circle, your community and any passerby who needs them.

What is the meaning?

The flags are created with brightly coloured pieces of fabric each depicting its own sacred message. When hung in high places the Lung ta carries the blessings and mantras written on each flag to all beings with the wind.

One common misconception about the flags it that they carry prayers to gods. However, Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras depicted on each flag are spread by the wind, up into the atmosphere, bringing compassion and benefits to all beings.

As the images and colours fade away by the elements, the prayers on the flag are inscribed on the universe. Traditionally, Tibetans continue to spread and renew their hopes by re mounting new flags alongside the old and worn, demonstrating the continuous need to adapt to the cycle of life challenges and changes.

The Colours and Mantras

The flags are arranged in a specific order beginning with blue, white, red, green then yellow, and each colour represents one of the five elements & the Five Pure Lights:

Blue: the sky and space

White: the air & wind

Red: fire

Green: water

Yellow: earth

The first word Om is a sacred syllable found in Indian religions.

The word Mani means "jewel" or "bead",

Padme is the "lotus flower" the Buddhist sacred flower,

Hum represents the spirit of enlightenment.
