Mudra of the Month - Prithvi
What are mudras?
A mudra is a set of hand gestures that are used in yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, tantric practice, reiki, reflexology and Indian classical dance. Mudra’s are also mentioned in Buddhist scriptures and are used by Buddhists in meditation.
How do mudras work?
Ancient sciences from Indian, Chinese and Eqyptian cultures believe that energy or prana flows through the body using a complex system of circuits, and that the body’s energy must be harnessed properly and remain free flowing to allow the body and mind to function effectively.
A mudra helps to regulate and control prana by directing your energy flow to a specific part of the body. When you form your hands into mudras, you complete your energy circuits and facilitate energy flow.
Prithvi mudra, or earth mudra:
Place the tip of your ring finger to the tip of your thumb and stretch all other fingers upwards.
Prithvi-vardhak mudra increases the Prithvi (earth) element and decreases the Agni (fire) element in the body. Practice of this mudra builds and invigorates bodily tissues like bones, cartilage, skin, hair, nails, muscles and tendons etc.
This mudra is said to energize the body and help prevent fatigue. It is recommended to use this mudra to ward off physical weakness.
This mudra can be performed at anytime of day. It is recommended 30 mins a day to fully receive the full benefits.
