Used as a water purifier and disinfectant in Russia since the 1770s, Shungite is an unusual form of carbon containing naturally occurring fullerenes (naturally occurring C60) and is believed to act as an antibacterial agent. Found on the shores of Lake Onega near the small settlement called Shun'ga (hence the name), Peter the Great made all soldiers in his army carry a piece of it during military campaigns to purify water and use on their wounds.
