The Makings of a Muse

muse1

myo͞oz/

A muse is a woman, or a force personified as a woman, who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist.

These women were more than companions or wives. They inspired artists with passion and creativity.

Through art, music and literature you can feel the power of their strength and femininity.

Our muse is Saraswati, who is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom and nature.

She is depicted as a beautiful woman to embody the concept of knowledge as supremely alluring.

Here is a list of some of our favourite muses throughout history that had a major impact on the world of art, music and fashion.

Gala Dali

It has been said that Gala Dali saved Dali from his own madness.

He has signed his paintings with both of their names as well as "it is mostly with your blood, Gala, that I paint my pictures."

Pattie Boyd

Pattie Boyd was described by the New York Times as "The Muse Who Made the Guitars Gently Weep."

She was the women behind the love song "Something" by George Harrison of the Beatles but later left him for Eric Clapton after he wrote "Layla" for her. Eric and Pattie later married, and she inspired him to write the song "Wonderful Tonight." This impressive list of love songs proves her title as a true musicians muse.

Edie Sedgwick

Edie Sedgwick was an American heiress, socialite, actress, and fashion model but was best known as Artist Andy Warhol's muse. He was fascinated by her lifestyle and beauty. She quickly became the star of many of his short films, filmed at his studio 'The Factory' in the 1960's.

Goddess of the Wilderness

In Greek mythology, Artemis was the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness and wild animals.

She was often depicted as a huntress, holding a bow and arrows wearing a knee length chiton. Her sacred animals were the deer and cypress, her symbols were a golden bow and arrow, a hunting dog, the stag and the moon.

She was also the goddess of childbirth, virginity and protector of young women.

She wished to not be defined by one city, but to rule the mountains and for the ability to help women with their pains from childbirth.

Invoke the strength and grace of the goddess of the wilderness with our bow and arrow inverted ring "Artemis" ring and "Omega" hammered brass ring. We combined the "Krys" midi ring to complete the look.

Sea Salt + Coral

This week we are inspired by the ocean and its incredible therapeutic properties. If you're stuck in the prairies, we have some tips so you can still harvest the oceans benefits without even leaving your home!

The natural ingredients sea salts, algae and seaweed, are packed full of nourishing minerals.

You can take algae and seaweed kelp orally to improve your brain function, cleanse your blood and balance your hormonal system. Trending now in alternative and holistic health circles are seaweed, kelp and spirulina. Both are easily added to your morning smoothie.

Add sea salts to a warm bath to detoxify your body and relax and relieve muscle tension. Bathing in a warm salt solution encourages your body to sweat which draws out toxins. On top of that, salt water also contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Our ocean inspired Coral ring and earring set captures the spirit of the incredible ocean. Allow it to be a constant reminder to just breathe.

Sat Chit Ananda

Sat Chit Ananda

is comprised of three Sanskrit words:

  • SAT – Existence. All that is being and non-being.
  • CHIT - Knowledge, consciousness, intelligence
  • ANANDA - Joy, love, bliss. The experience of absolute consciousness, oneness. This is the ultimate experience that everyone strives for: heaven or nirvana.

Karel Werner, author of A Popular Dictionary of Hinduism, describes Sat-chit-anada as a “sublimely blissful experience of the boundless, pure consciousness, a glimpse of ultimate reality.”

Water + Sky

The deep blue hues found in the majestic earth elements, water and sky, bring us serenity and stability.

This week, the majestic Rocky Mountains with their towering waterfalls, emerald lakes and blue skies, inspired us to take a moment and reconnect with nature’s beauty and harness its incredible energy.

Two of our pieces that capture the beauty of water and sky are the Grace earring made of two beautiful blueish green gemstone: Turquoise and Labradorite.

Turquoise is a stone that appears in a divine stream of colors that range from aqua blue to light azure green. The beautiful gemstone has mesmerized cultures for many centuries, from Persian and Egyptian royals to Native People in North, Central and South America. Like clear waters, it has a pure and uplifting energy.

Turquoise will provide protection from any negativity, as well as a clear connection to the purity of natural elements, water and air.

The turquoise stone will bring peace and higher energy to any relationship.

Labradorite is commonly gray-green, dark gray, or black with aggregate layers that refract light as iridescent flashes from blue to green to gold. It is considered by mystics to be a stone of transformation and magic. Inuit folklore claims labradorite fell from the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis. They believe it is an ordinary stone that transforms into the extraordinary. The shimmer of mystical blue light separates the waking world from unseen realms.

Labradorite will clear negativity as well as balance and protect your aura. Wearing it will help provide clarity and insight into your destiny, all while attracting success into your life. Labradorite is also believed to increase intuition and provide mental illumination.

Saraswati Grace earrings are faceted checker-cut crystals and stones in a scalloped brass setting. Available in select stores and online.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the Earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.”

Mudra of the Month - Prithvi

What are mudras?

A mudra is a set of hand gestures that are used in yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, tantric practice, reiki, reflexology and Indian classical dance. Mudra’s are also mentioned in Buddhist scriptures and are used by Buddhists in meditation.

How do mudras work?

Ancient sciences from Indian, Chinese and Eqyptian cultures believe that energy or prana flows through the body using a complex system of circuits, and that the body’s energy must be harnessed properly and remain free flowing to allow the body and mind to function effectively.

A mudra helps to regulate and control prana by directing your energy flow to a specific part of the body. When you form your hands into mudras, you complete your energy circuits and facilitate energy flow.

Prithvi mudra, or earth mudra:

Place the tip of your ring finger to the tip of your thumb and stretch all other fingers upwards.

Prithvi-vardhak mudra increases the Prithvi (earth) element and decreases the Agni (fire) element in the body. Practice of this mudra builds and invigorates bodily tissues like bones, cartilage, skin, hair, nails, muscles and tendons etc.

This mudra is said to energize the body and help prevent fatigue. It is recommended to use this mudra to ward off physical weakness.

This mudra can be performed at anytime of day. It is recommended 30 mins a day to fully receive the full benefits.

To adorn your hands while practicing your mudras, we chose the Suzie & Joey midi rings and the Chandra & Rosa rings in brass. The bracelet shown is the Seed of Life. Also shown is our Mehndi chain, inspired by the symbols used in the henna tradition. Shop online and in store now.

Practice this earth mudra to ward off fatigue as the rainy fall days begin to take over.

IT'S TIME TO BLOOM - Edmonton

BLOOM 2.0 is a yoga, music and inspirational speaker event created to inspire, connect and celebrate LIFE. Saraswati Designs would like to welcome you to be a part of this incredible event this year from October 3-5 in Edmonton. We are so excited to share our locally designed, handcrafted jewelry with this dynamic community.

Opening Gala at the Muttart Conservatory, with raw food, meditation in a glass temperate pyramid and a pranamaya session in the tropical rainforest pyramid, with talks, raw food and music by DJ Drez to follow!

Some examples of the amazing events this year at BLOOM are:

  • Radiant mind, body of bliss, Taught by Rameen Peyrow

  • Mantra, Beats and Meditations with MC Yogi, Amanda Giacomini & DJ Drez

  • Desire Map: An evening with Danielle Laporte.

Saraswati designs has hand picked three pieces that are symbolic of peace and personal empowerment: Seed of Life, Sri Yanta and the Flower of Life to take with you on your journey beyond your experiences at BLOOM as a constant reminder.

Our Seed of Life necklaces and bracelets contain ancient value, depicting the fundamental forms of space and time. This sacred symbol helps to create new pathways in life and connect to the consciousness and balance of sacred geometry.

Our necklace Sri Yantra is a visual representation of the sound OM, from the yogic tradition. Comprised of interlocking triangles, the center point represents the beginning of creation. Together these 43 triangles form a symbolic web of the entire cosmos. Use in meditation to gain insight into the nature of existence and to enhance your personal peace, empowerment and prosperity.

The Flower of Life is another symbol of sacred geometry depicting the forms of space and time. It has been discovered in many ancient sites throughout many cultures such as the Temple of Osiris in Egypt, the Golden Temple in India, and the Forbidden city in China.

Saraswati looks forward to being a part of your experience at BLOOM 2.0 this October.
